Explore Southampton's culture and heritage

What’s more enjoyable than travelling back in time, drifting through an extraordinary art exhibition or getting lost in an incredible live concert? A dose of culture on any trip provides a shot of escapism but also a slice of history and insight into what makes the place tick.

Every city has its sights, but Southampton’s are a cut-above. With a history dating back to Roman times, a legacy encompassing The Mayflower, Titanic and the Spitfire, little wonder it serves up a heady cultural offering, ranging from Renaissance gallery artworks to the sound of Afrobeat pulsing from a medieval wine vault.

Southampton is one of the most culturally diverse places in the UK, it’s home to more than 150 languages, it’s also one of the most open-minded, characteristics reflected in its cultural attractions. Discover galleries, museums and theatres but also pop-up music festivals, walking tours, laser light shows and bold street art. Throw yourself into art, music, festivals and cuisine and plan an immersive trip firmly on the next level.

Soak up the Cultural Quarter

Make a beeline for the city’s Cultural Quarter, minutes’ walk from the train centre and centred around Guildhall Square, it’s the hub for live music, galleries bars, restaurants and entertainment. Here you’ll find the big-hitters, Southampton City Art GallerySeaCity Museum, the John Hansard Gallery and Mayflower Theatre but it’s also the space for creative displays and events, such as the Chinese New Year and Oktoberfest – so you might enjoy a live performance as you explore.

To get to grips with the heritage of this city, SeaCity Museum is a must-see, following the tragic legacy of the Titanic with an interactive model of the ship, it’s impossible not to be moved by the recorded messages of its passengers and the ship’s original documents and objects. For a whistle-stop tour, follow The Gateway to the World exhibition which tracks 200,000 years of history to WWII.

Housed in the Civic Centre, The Southampton City Art Gallery is considered one of the best outside London boasting more than 5,000 works from Renaissance art to present day, with paintings by Gainsborough and Turner and a rolling programme of exhibitions from sculpture to digitised collections.
