Start your walk at the Bargate

Your journey begins at one of Southampton’s most recognisable landmarks – the Bargate.

Standing at the historic entrance to the Old Town, this impressive medieval gateway has watched over Southampton for hundreds of years. From here, follow the trail through the Old Town and discover surviving stretches of the medieval walls, historic streets and fascinating landmarks.

Keep an eye out for interpretation along the route, which helps reveal the stories behind the buildings, walls and people that shaped Southampton.

Walk alongside Southampton’s historic walls

One of the highlights of the trail is the chance to get close to the medieval walls themselves.

The route takes you towards the Esplanade and Town Quay, where substantial sections of Southampton’s historic defences remain. In places you can walk alongside the walls and even walk on top of surviving sections, giving you a completely different perspective on the Old Town.

Look closely and imagine medieval Southampton: merchants arriving with valuable cargo, busy quaysides, narrow streets filled with traders and townspeople, and guards watching from the walls.
