Chinese New Year is one of the largest celebrations of the Lunar New Year festivals in the world. It is celebrated by communities across the UK and Southampton is no exception! February will see an exciting programme of festivities from spirited dragon parades to family-friendly traditional arts and crafts. Dive into the action-packed details of what’s happening across the city below.

When is Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year begins on the day of the new moon that appears between 21 January to 20 February and lasts for roughly 15 days until the full moon. This year, the lunar new year begins on 17 February 2026.

During this auspicious period, families come together to partake in shared meals and engage in the age-old tradition of sprucing up their homes to make way for good fortune and usher in the new year. The vibrant colour red takes centre stage, symbolising not only good luck but also the essence of joy along with the regal hue of gold which is synonymous with wealth and prosperity. What is the Chinese zodiac for 2026?

2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse. The Horse is the seventh sign in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac, symbolising freedom, energy, passion and independence. When paired with the Fire element, these traits are intensified, bringing boldness, confidence and a strong drive for action.

People born under the Horse sign are believed to be spirited, hardworking and highly sociable. They thrive on movement and change, often displaying natural leadership and an optimistic outlook. Known for their determination and quick thinking, Fire Horses in particular are seen as charismatic and fearless, pursuing their goals with enthusiasm and a strong sense of individuality.

Previous years of the horse: 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966 and 1954
