Celebrate Black History month in Southampton

October sees the celebration of Black History Month (1 - 31 October). First celebrated in the UK in 1987, Black History Month is an important opportunity to reflect on the diverse histories of those of African and Caribbean descent, taking note of achievements, contributions, and celebrating key figures who have made substantial contributions to the country.

In and around Southampton, there are some great events taking place all in celebration of Black History Month.

A Black History Month exhibition 2025

3rd - 24th October, ArtQuay Gallery

Resonance brings African art, culture, and creativity to the heart of Southampton for Black History Month 2025. The exhibition features works inspired by African textiles, masks, landscapes, and contemporary interpretations, celebrating the richness and diversity of African artistic expression. With bold colours, striking imagery, and shared creativity, Resonance offers visitors the chance to reflect on heritage, identity, and the connections between past, present, and future. The gallery is open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11am to 4pm. Learn more here.

Hidden Histories Trail: Jane Austen's Southampton and Black Georgians

5th October, God’s House Tower

In the lead-up to Jane Austen’s 250th anniversary, Southampton’s Hidden Histories guides present a specially curated walking tour uncovering the stories of Black Georgians who lived and worked in the city. From soldiers and sailors to abolitionists, actors, and writers, discover the diverse heritage that shaped Southampton during Jane Austen’s time. Tours start and finish at God’s House Tower, running weekly throughout October, with proceeds supporting further research into the city’s rich and varied history. Find out more here.

Exhibition: Colourism

October 2025, Multi-venues city wide

Featuring striking images by renowned local live music and documentary photographer Nosa Malcom, 'Colourism' explores the profound impact of colourism worldwide - a prejudice in which people with darker skins experience disadvantages compared with those with a lighter complexion.

This powerful exhibition will be displayed in God's House Tower, Mayflower Studios, Southampton Solent University, local libraries (Southampton Central Library, Woolston Library and Shirley Library), October Books, and Barton Peveril College, to challenge perceptions and ignite conversations about the significant effects of colourism to inspires us to work towards a more equitable and inclusive society. Online History Talk with Don John: Is Black History Month Relevant in Southampton?

Tuesday 7th October 2025, 7.30pm – 8.30pm, SeaCity Museum

Discover more about Southampton’s Black History this September with a special talk from Don John, founder of Black History Month South and a leading consultant on history, race and diversity.

Through a blend of personal experience and historical research, Don will share powerful stories that highlight the city’s Black History and invite discussion on the role and relevance of Black History Month in Southampton today. Book your tickets here.

7th -18th October 2025, Mayflower Theatre

TINA – The Tina Turner Musical comes to Southampton, celebrating the life and career of the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Set to her iconic hits, the show tells her inspiring journey from Nutbush, Tennessee, to global superstardom, highlighting her resilience, talent, and record-breaking achievements. Black Business Art and Music Festival (BBAM!)

12th October 2025, Guildhall Square

The Black Business Art and Music Festival (BBAM!) returns to Guildhall Square for its third year, brought to you by TUVAA!

Celebrate and explore Black cultures, creatives and local businesses with a full day of workshops, food stalls, performances and more. This year, 12 village stalls will showcase different cultures from across the African continent and Caribbean islands, with a focus on untold stories.

Southampton Jazz Festival

18th October 2025, Mayflower Studios

Step into Southampton’s rich musical past with Southampton’s Jazz Story – a one-night-only event celebrating the city’s deep connections to jazz and the social history it reflects.

Enjoy performances from a 12-piece house band with guest vocalists, narration and rare archival visuals as the show takes you on a journey from the 1920s to today.

“Black In Focus” celebrates Black British film by showcasing authentic stories without focusing on trauma. Screening previously created films and learner-made videos, the event highlights real experiences and perspectives, offering a refreshing alternative to the typical narratives dominating mainstream cinema.
