Heritage Open Days in Southampton
In September, thousands of heritage sites across England will open their doors once again to the public - including some of Southampton’s most iconic sites - for Heritage Open Days. Since its establishment in 1994, this volunteer led event continues to grow making it the largest community event of British history and culture. All sites participating in the open days are free to visit.

What sites will be open in Southampton for Heritage Open Days?
Bargate
One of Southampton’s most iconic heritage landmarks, the Bargate has stood at the heart of the city for more than 800 years. Built around 1180 as part of Southampton’s medieval town walls, this Grade I listed gatehouse was once the main entrance into the city and remains a fascinating reminder of Southampton’s past.

During Heritage Open Days, visitors will have the chance to explore the Bargate and discover more about its history. Join the Southampton Archaeology Society (SAS) stand as they explore this year’s theme, ‘Everyday Histories’, across both weekends. On 19–20 September, See Southampton will also be sharing the story of carriage making in the city, inspired by the work of Godfrey.
For a unique view of the city, pre-book a roof access session and climb to the top of the Bargate. Sessions are available at 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. You can book here.
Castle Vault and Castle Hall
Step back in time and explore two of Southampton's oldest surviving medieval buildings. Castle Hall and Castle Vault are rare reminders of the once impressive Southampton Castle, offering a fascinating glimpse into the city's Norman past.
Castle Hall dates back to the early 12th century and is the largest surviving building from the former castle complex. Nearby, Castle Vault is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval vaults in Southampton. Originally used to store the King's wine, it has played many roles throughout its history, including serving as an air raid shelter during the Second World War.

Gods House Tower
Discover one of Southampton's most fascinating historic landmarks at God’s House Tower, where centuries of history meet contemporary art. First built in the late 12th century as a gateway into the medieval town, the building has served many purposes over the years from defending the city and housing prisoners to becoming the award-winning arts and heritage venue it is today.

King Johns Palace
Explore one of the finest surviving examples of Norman domestic architecture in England. Despite its name, there is no evidence that King John ever stayed here, but this remarkable building has played an important role in Southampton's history for more than 800 years.
Originally built as a merchant's house overlooking the medieval quayside, it later became part of the town's coastal defences following the French raid of 1338. Over the centuries, it has also served as stables, a coal merchant's premises and even a private museum, with each chapter adding to its fascinating story.

Steamship Shieldhall
Step aboard one of Britain's finest preserved steamships and discover a rare piece of the nation's maritime heritage. Built in 1955 and now part of the National Historic Fleet, Steamship Shieldhall is lovingly maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers who keep her remarkable story alive.
During Heritage Open Days, enjoy a pre-booked guided visit around the ship, taking you from the bridge to the engine room. Meet the volunteer crew, learn what life is like aboard a heritage steamship and see original features including the impressive steam engines, traditional bridge controls and historic steam-powered steering gear. After your tour, relax on board with refreshments available to purchase in the saloon.

St Juliens Chapel
Discover one of Southampton’s oldest places of worship at St Julien’s Chapel, a Grade I listed building. Founded around 1197 as part of the Hospital of St Julien, the chapel originally served pilgrims travelling to Canterbury and those in need of shelter.
Over the centuries, the chapel has welcomed different communities, including French Protestant worshippers who used the building from the 16th century until the Second World War, earning it the nickname ‘The French Church’.
During Heritage Open Days, visitors can step inside this historic chapel and explore its unique architecture, centuries-old connections or simply to enjoy a moment of calm in a quiet space.

The West Gate
Built in the 14th century as part of the city’s defences, the West Gate was one of the main entrances into medieval Southampton and provided access to the bustling West Quay, where much of the city’s maritime trade took place. Over the centuries, the gate has witnessed some of the most significant moments in Southampton’s history. It was the route taken by Henry V’s army as they left the city for the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, and later the departure point for the Pilgrim Fathers as they set sail aboard the Mayflower in 1620.
